welcome

hi, my name is deena and this is the place where i will be regularly posting new photos and general happenings. i am a seattle and portland photographer who specializes in natural light photography of kids and families. i also enjoy shooting weddings, events, parties and life in general.

for me, it is more about being who you are. it never ceases to amaze me how quickly families will give you a glimpse into their world. i love being privy to the all of the silly nicknames, the secret tickle spots, and the impromptu hugs. it makes me smile to watch parents be ridiculously silly trying to make their kids laugh. i have heard more songs sung off key than you can imagine (although i have to admit most of them were me). bribes? please, i have heard them all.

give me bruised up knees, messed up hair and drool any day. life is natural and that is how i would like to capture it for you.

thanks for stopping by!

happy father’s day

i recently came across this photo of my dad and my niece, alex. it must be at least six years old- back when she was all cheeks. it’s one of my faves of the two of them- it was taken in downtown poulsbo and i want to say that they are looking into the window of a toy store but i’m a little fuzzy on that part.

viv and trixie

i got to hang out w/ these cuties again last weekend. they were all about flower picking. i love this first series- it started by me saying, “hey, maybe we should take some pictures over here by these pretty flowers.” so trixie came over and stood in front of me- looking at the flowers. then i said, “hey, maybe you could turn this way for one”. and then out of nowhere her big sis vivian did a sneak attack and threw a bunch of petals at her. needless to say, she thought it was hi-larious.

introducing sofia

even though she fought it a bit in the beginning, sofia finally made my dreams of a snuggly, sleepy newborn come true. you should have seen her when we put her down on the fur- she all but melted like butter. her mom told me sofia had her dad’s feet and i didn’t realize how right she was until i saw them side by side.

the schillers

i got to hang out w/ the schiller crew last weekend. i hadn’t seen dawson in awhile and now he’s almost one- crazy how that happens. christopher is one of the sweetest ten year old boys i know and it’s fun watching him goof around with his dad- they are both total characters. they are taking taekwondo class together and they showed me some of their new moves. cross your fingers for them because they have a belt advancement test coming up soon.

family love

i met up with this crew last weekend out at oxbow park. they were all converging on portland for alex’s graduation from law school at lewis and clark. it was one of those sittings where i’m reminded of why i love my job. they were so easy going and light-hearted with each other. i could tell they genuinely enjoyed each other’s company and it was so nice to be around. fun fact, dotty (in pink) was a model for over 30 years. how cute is she w/ her beau, george? they started dating when they   were 80. don’t they both look great?

i’ve got a crush

and i think you can see why- i mean, really, could you resist this mug? i met up w/ my buddy garvey last weekend and we went to the dog park w/ mom and dad. he’s got it figured out now and knows when they are just a few blocks away. then after a short cat nap in the car, we took a few family pics back at the homestead.

introducing brecken

i got to meet brecken last weekend at just twelve days old. it’s always fun to get to do maternity pics and then newborn pics. he was such a mellow roaster but, per usual, or so it seems lately- he was wide awake the whole time except for the last five minutes. i always have visions of sleeping newborns and then picture day comes and they are awake for the longest stretch ever. oh well, lucky for him he’s cute awake too. plus he’s got some pretty good chub potential.

mad props

i got to hang out w/ my folks and my niece last weekend. they came to pdx and first up was brunch at mothers (yum- i’m already thinking about how i’m going to get the french toast next time). we strolled through the farmers market and then headed to powell’s bookstore. then it was time for more coffee at stumptown and last but not least the rhododendron garden. it was so pretty- i had no idea- it’s kind of a little oasis in the middle of the city. mad props to my folks for going along w/ my kissy face idea. i kind of crack up every time i look at my dad’s pic- somehow his fishy face is just so good. right after he said, “when are we going to see these? oh wait, i bet it’ll be on your blog, huh?” yep. hee hee.

carson and luke

their mom had maybe mentioned that these two were energetic but what she didn’t mention was how if you looked up “boys” in the dictionary, you’d find these two. i’m pretty sure they were the happiest when they were finding bugs, splashing in the water, throwing rocks, setting harry potter spells, wrestling with dad and rolling down the grassy hill. i especially love the first one where dad is coming in for a tickle attack and carson is getting ready to karate chop him. the wrestling was pretty funny too.

garvey

i got to hang out w/ my friend’s new baby last weekend. he is such a love mixed with all that spastic puppy energy. so much to chew on and so little time.
